![]() ![]() A: I will attempt to answer your question concerning eternal security by saying, I believe that a Christian can cease to be a Christian through apostasy or "falling away" and in that case he can be lost. The Scripture that I am going to give you for study is: 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6 If
they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify
to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. This scripture is abundantly
clear, and to try to explain it away as referring to a sinner under conviction
as some do, is to corrupt the Scripture. The Apostle Paul said that
Demas who was once saved "hath forsaken me,
having loved this present world" (2nd Timothy
4:10). Jesus said "If
ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed" (John
8:31). Paul said that you could fall from grace (Galatians 5:4). He also said "some shall depart from the faith" (1st Timothy 4:10). How can you depart from something
you have never experienced? Peter gave a graphic example of a person once being saved and then being lost. He said: (2nd
Peter 2:20-22) We read concerning Christ
sheep " I give unto them eternal life; and
they shall never perish" (John 10:28).
The proponents of eternal
security use this passage wrongly, for Christ sheep are those who hear his voice
and follow Him, not the other way (see John
10:27). So, as long as we hear His
voice and follow Him, we are safe and secure. I see no promise here for those
that stop hearing and following Jesus. People that put their trust
in eternal security contend that a sheep is always a sheep and cannot be anything
else. But we see that the bible
teaches that if we stray from God's fold, we are lost sheep (Luke
15:6). Another theory used is, that
no matter how bad a child may become, he is always a child of his father. So
those who were once children of God must remain His children no matter how deep
in sin they may become involved. Spiritual birth is compared
to natural birth, but without basic. Jesus was the Only Begotten
Son of God; He could not become anything else. We are adopted sons (
Romans 8:15-9:4 ; Galatians
4:5 ; Ephesians 1:5 ) So you see Christians can
fall back into sin and lose their sonship, Adam, once a son of God, lost his
sonship. Another argument that is
used, is that a Christian has eternal life, so consequently it is forever. It is true that life is eternal,
but a person does not necessarily eternally hold onto it. Jesus said, "If
ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed" (John
8:31). Scripture plainly teaches
if anyone desires to be saved, no matter how weak and stumbling that Christian
may be, he will not be lost (John 3:15-16;
10:27-29; Romans 8:35-49;
14:4; Ephesians 1:13). However, if that person wants
to turn his back on God, he has the option to do so; and if he does, according
to the Word of God, he will be lost. The Gospel, as taught in
the Word of God gives the greatest assurance of all: I never worry about my
salvation because I have purposed in my heart to live for God no matter what
comes or goes and I know that God is able to keep me from falling, according
to the Scriptures: Jude 1:24-25 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, 25
To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty,
dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. I have heard friends of mine
that believe in eternal salvation say that "When the rapture takes place,
millions of Christians will leave out of nightclubs, roadhouses, saloons, gambling
dens, even some in the act of committing adultery, and so forth, and will be
transformed and immediately go to be with Jesus Christ." This kind of teaching is
a false doctrine. Actually I believe it is a Satanic doctrine to give people
a false sense of security. I personally have seen people
deceived by this teaching and while living a very ungodly life, say that they
believed that they would go to be with God in heaven if they were to die. This is a trick of Satan,
and I'm afraid that preachers and churches have presented it, to increase their
membership and finances. Sometimes people will become
very angry with you when you disagree with their theory of eternal security.
Instead of making their life right with God, they continue to live in sin. I'm afraid that millions
of people are living in open sin, making no effort at all to live for God, thinking
they are going to heaven. Of course, if they do not
change, they will die and be eternally lost in hell. Many other true Christians
who believe this doctrine do not concern themselves too much with sinful loved
ones, even though these loved ones may be living a vile life. They think "Well they
have once been saved, and even though they are out of fellowship with God, they
will go to heaven when they die." sometimes, because of this theory, little
effort is made to get them back right with God. Eternal security is taught
in Scripture on the basic of obedience to God. God has made full
provision "to keep men ...
and present them faultless" (Jude:24)
in heaven if they will cooperate. It certainly won’t
disappoint me if everyone living outside the will of God is allowed into heaven.
It would be fine with me if every ungodly person were to go to heaven, but I
don’t believe it will happen. I will say that if God were
to tell me that I could go to heaven and still live ungodly and sinful and any
old rotten lowdown way that I wanted, it would not change my lifestyle one iota.
I would still want to live righteous for my Lord Jesus. Presidential candidate John
Kerry said recently that “We are all God’s children” but we
are not. He must have been unaware of the time when Jesus was talking to some men and He said that they were children of the devil, Jesus plainly said in John
8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts
of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not
in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh
of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. But let me say this in closing,
I truly believe that there is no provision except hell for those who rebel against
God's directions All hope of assurance while
living in rebellion is a fool's hope. In summary, I take the position
that any teaching of security that encourages sin is false and more than false
I believe that it is a satanic doctrine. Thank you for your question.
